Three-Day Capacity Building Training Workshop for Young Democracy Drivers on Democracy and Civic Engagement in North-West Nigeria

A 3-day Capacity Building Training Workshop for Young Democracy Drivers in North-West Nigeria on Strengthening Youth Political Participation in North-West Nigeria with funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) was organized by the Organization for Community Civic Engagement (OCCEN) from August 29 – 31, 2019 held at K-Suite Hotel, Race Course Road, Kano. A total of 36 participants took part in the workshop. This number comprised 20 males and 16 females. These participants came from diverse groups in the five North-West states of Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano and Zamfara, including youth organizations, student union bodies, civil society groups, media, political class, etc. The conduct of the workshop involved presentations, contributions, questions and answers on various themes.

Kano Town Hall on Voter Education

As part of its series of town-hall meetings focused on voter education across the northwest region; ahead of the 2019 election, last week Wednesday, the Organization for Community Civic Engagement (OCCEN) hosted a one day town-hall meeting on INEC’s new voting guidelines in Kano which was attended by election stakeholders including INEC, the police and members of the civil society.

A Townhall Meeting on the 21 Constitutional Amendment Bills

The members of National Assembly had cast their votes in favour of altering sections of the constitution as proposed by 21 out of 33 amendment bills in respect of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as debated. It is in realization of this, that the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Research and Training, Mambayya House, Bayero University, Kano in collaboration with the Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL), Kano which is a five-year DFID funded Public Sector Accountability and Governance Program, working in three States of Jigawa, Kaduna, and Kano and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) supported Organization for Community Civic Engagement (OCCEN), a Kano-based Civil Society Organization (CSO) dedicated to the promotion of youth awareness on democracy, human rights, participation and engagement in the political process and governance at the grassroots, organized a One-Day Townhall Meeting to discuss the 21 constitutional amendment bills

Day OCCEN hosted town-hall meeting on OGP in Kaduna

The Organization for Community Civic Engagement’s Kaduna town-hall meeting was attended by diverse civil society, youth and citizens groups and featured passionate discussions about the Open Government Partnership (OGP) process. Shortly after Nigeria joined the Open Government Partnership (OGP) process in 2016, Kaduna state also joined the process making it the first Nigerian state to join the partnership and the 15th subnational government in the whole world to do so.
